Fabric Manipulation Artists

  Three Dimensional Fabric Manipulation

                                     Alexander McQueen

Alexander McQueen uses a lot of fabric manipulation in his designs to create texture, shape and to make his pieces unique. There are many ways to manipulate fabric to make it three dimensional. Techniques include gathering pleating tucking shirring quilting and smocking. To create this design McQueen has taken a very textured fabric and used fabric manipulation to create more volume and shape to this dress.

                                             Ruth Singer

Ruth Singer is a textile artist who uses a lot of three dimensional fabric manipulation in her work. Ruth uses a lot of smocking in her designs. Ruth uses applique and quilting in her work as well.

Jasper Johns

Jasper Johns

Jasper Johns is known for painting and print making.

Jasper is best known for his paintings.
Jasper created a continuous line drawing using charcoal and numbers from one to ten.
When he created this drawing he didn't take the charcoal off the paper until he had completed the drawing. His early pieces were composed using numbers, targets, maps, letters and flags. Since the 1980s, Jasper typically produces only four to five paintings a year and some years he doesn't produce any.

Gareth Pugh

Gareth Pugh is a English-born fashion designer.
Pugh’s clothes have been described as wearable sculptures.
In January 2011, Pugh was invited to be the guest designer at Italian trade show Pitti.

I really liked the way Pugh has used makeup to create a huge eye look.
I feel his looks are have busy prints but a simple style of clothing.
I  like the use of fur for hair and how the hair isnt perfect and is messy and free.
I am not sure if he has used masks or makeup to create the illusion of a doll like face.

Gareth Pugh

Gareth Pugh

His final collection at St. Martins used balloons to accentuate models' joints and limbs. This technique became one of his trademarks. Pugh uses a lot of black and white which suits this unit really well. One of Pugh's trademarks is his experimentation with form and volume. He has used materials including mink, parachute silk, foam footballs, Afro-weave synthetic hair, and electrically charged plastic in his clothing.

In 2006, he had his first solo show at London Fashion Week.
Gareth Pugh’s recent 2015 collection ready to wear is a lot more wearable than his earlier designs. In his ready to wear collection he uses black and paints a red cross on the models faces, Red for Pugh meant love, war and England.
